Louisiana Tech coach Skip Holtz might not recognize FIU offensive line coach Steve Shankweiler these days — Shankweiler is down 30 pounds from last year — but he recognizes Shankweiler’s work.
The two were on the same staff during one of Shankweiler’s three periods at East Carolina, and Shankweiler coached the offensive line for three years under Holtz at South Florida.
“Their offensive line is athletic, probably the most athletic offensive line we’ve seen,” Holtz said. “They’re going to run a lot of zone schemes at you. They’re very quick up front. They’re not a power football team as much as they are athletic.”
▪ Last year, FIU lived off turnovers. This year, it’s FIU’s opponents. Of the 64 points allowed by FIU, 34 were scored or set up by turnovers — two interceptions returned for touchdowns, and three fumbles setting up touchdown drives.
