Freshman running back Alex Gardner’s right shoulder no longer wore a sling, but Gardner is still out this week against Old Dominion, doubtful for the home finale against Middle Tennessee State and questionable for the season finale against North Texas.

Freshman linebacker Anthony Wint and his injured knee will miss this week, but FIU coach Ron Turner said he would be surprised if Wint wasn’t ready for the Middle Tennessee game. Freshman linebacker Fred Russ had his right arm in a sling Tuesday.

▪ Defensive coordinator Josh Conklin lauded sophomore cornerback Wilkerson Myrtil and freshman cornerback Shamarke Spence for their play Saturday against Rice. Spence spent much of the second half covering Rice’s top receiver, Jordan Taylor, giving up eight inches in height, 28 pounds and three years of experience.
