Asked to name the unexpected leaders who have emerged over the first week of training camp, coach Ron Turner named freshman quarterback Christian Alexander, redshirt junior center/guard Mike Montero, junior linebacker Treyvon Williams and sophomore linebacker Anthony Wint.

“Christian is maybe a freshman who’s not a freshman,” Turner said. “He’s a five-year starter in high school [Lakeland Christian]. I’ve never heard of that in my life. I didn’t know you could do it. I would’ve bet $100 you couldn’t play varsity football five years. He’s very, very smart, very instinctive, and he is a good leader.

“And [freshman quarterback] Maurice [Alexander] will be once he gets more reps. He’s the same kind of kid.”

Enrolling in January gave Christian Alexander the early boost on the depth chart.

▪ Sophomore running back Napoleon Maxwell, part of FIU’s running back trident, limped off after practice with what appeared to be a left-knee issue.
