FIU Panthers’ Jonnu Smith is All-America Second Team Pick
CBSSports.com’s two-deep midseason All-America team contained one player from a school outside the Power Five conferences: FIU sophomore tight end Jonnu Smith on the Second Team.
Smith leads FIU with 34 receptions for 411 yards (second in Conference USA) and four touchdowns. He’s caught a pass in each of his 19 college career games.
While offensive line coach Steve Shankweiler carries the offensive coordinator title, FIU coach Ron Turner still calls the offensive plays. Turner admits when facing a team like Marshall, the offensive play caller must remind himself before and during the game not to panic if Marshall goes up 10-0 or 14-0 early.
“That’s what they want you to do, and that’s the worst thing you can do against this team,” Turner said. “Because, then, you’ll be three-and-out, not using much time and they get the ball back. You’ve got to stick with your game plan.”
