The FIU Panthers are still in control of Conference USA’s East Division.

James Morgan, in his first year at FIU, broke the Panthers’ single-season record for touchdown passes, leading his team to a 45-7 win against host Texas-San Antonio on Saturday night.

FIU is 7-3 overall and 5-1 in league play. Middle Tennessee, which defeated Texas-El Paso 48-32 on Saturday, is 6-1 in league play. However, FIU owns the tiebreaker, if needed, because it beat Middle Tennessee earlier this season.

Morgan has 24 TD passes with two regular-season games and a bowl game yet to go this season. He completed 19 of 29 passes for 291 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions against UTSA.

Alex McGough, who is now on an NFL practice squad with the Seattle Seahawks, held the previous FIU touchdown record with 21.

Morgan on Saturday threw scoring passes to Maurice Alexander (19 yards), Tony Gaiter (seven yards) and C.J. Worton (12 yards).

FIU also got a two-yard touchdown run from Napoleon Maxwell, a 23-yard field goal by Jose Borregales and a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown by freshman linebacker Rocky Jacques-Louis.

Backup quarterback Christian Alexander closed out FIU’s scoring with a 17-yard touchdown run.
