The FIU baseball team entered the series finale against Western Kentucky with a 2-3 record on Sundays in Conference USA play. Western Kentucky’s first baseman carries the surname “Church.”
No contest for who had the better Sunday. Lantana Santaluces graduate Ryan Church went 6 for 6 with two doubles, a home run and five RBI as Western Kentucky obliterated host FIU 17-2 in seven innings by the run rule.
Sophomore pitcher Chris Mourelle (5-4), who had the lowest ERA on FIU’s staff, gave up 12 hits and eight runs in 32/3 innings. Western Kentucky batted around in the fourth and fifth innings.
FIU fell to 17-22 overall, 8-10 in the conference, dropping to the eighth and final spot that gets into the Conference USA tournament.
▪ FIU 2, Western Kentucky 1: The host Panthers (27-22, 8-13 Conference USA) used two runs in the fifth inning to top Western Kentucky.
Panthers ace Corinne Jenkins (17-9) went the distance and limited the potent Toppers to four hits and one run while striking out five.
▪ Barry 5, Florida Tech 1: No.19 Barry (31-13, 15-6) won an important rubber game to take its Sunshine State Conference series against host Florida Tech.
