Adrian Diaz set a FIU school record and NCAA season high with 13 blocks as the Golden Panthers rallied late to defeat the UAB Blazers 70-66 on senior night Saturday at FIU Arena.
“I just put my hands up,” Diaz said. “I was anticipating the blocks. They were just coming into my hands.”
In addition to the blocked shots record, Diaz had a triple-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Down 66-65 with 26 seconds left, senior Kris Gulley, a Conference USA all-academic student, came up big with an offensive rebound, put back and free throw for a three-point play.
UAB’s Nick Norton had hit 5 of 9 three-pointers on the night but missed the potential game-winner with seven seconds left in the game. Diaz collected the rebound to help secure the win, and Dennis Mavin connected on two late free throws.
FIU (15-16, 8-20 C-USA) led UAB (16-15, 12-6) 31-26 at halftime. Diaz led the Panthers in the first half with 10 points, seven blocks and seven rebounds.
Daviyon Draper led FIU with 20 points. Mavin had 19 points and finished the season with 531, third most in a single season at FIU.
