Florida Atlantic coach Willie Taggart has been known for his recruiting prowess even before his college head-coaching career began.

Now in his first year with FAU, he has landed the Owls highest-rated prospect.

Taggart, who grew up a Florida State fan and later coached the Seminoles before being fired last year and subsequently hired by FAU, landed the son of FSU legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders.

Shedeuer Sanders, a consensus four-star quarterback from Trinity Christian School outside of Dallas, announced his commitment Monday night via a social media post.

A rising senior, Sanders had 3,477 passing yards with 47 touchdowns against just four interceptions last season. He has 89 touchdowns and more than 6,500 passing yards combined over the past two seasons.

Sanders had offers from Alabama and Baylor among other schools, and is rated the No. 14 pro-style quarterback for the Class of 2021, according to the 247 Sports’ composite rankings.

Sanders’ pledge to join the Owls gives Taggart his second quarterback signing. He signed his son, Willie Taggart Jr., in the 2020 class. The Owls also have Cordell Littlejohn (2018 class) and starter Chris Robison on the roster.

Taggart began making a name for himself as a recruiter during his time as an assistant on Jim Harbaugh’s staff at Stanford. That continued when Taggart created a Florida pipeline to his alma mater, Western Kentucky, as the Hilltoppers head coach. Taggart then went to USF, Oregon and FSU before his current post at FAU.
