Barry University reaches Elite 8 of NCAA Division II Tournament
Yunio Barrueta and Elvar Fridriksson each scored 21 points and the Barry Buccaneers beat host Alabama-Huntsville 87-83 Tuesday night to win the NCAA Division II South Region championship.
It is the first outright title in the program’s history. It’s also the first time Barry has advanced to the Elite Eight.
Barry (26-6) moves on to the Elite Eight in Frisco, Texas, to play Lincoln Memorial (32-2) at 1 p.m. March 23.
Fridriksson hit 5 of 10 from three-point range, and added five assists and seven rebounds. Barrueta was 8 of 17 from the floor, and had eight boards and two steals. Adrian Gonzalez scored 14 points, and Undra Mitchem had 12.
Seab Webster had 21 points to lead the Chargers (25-8).
