Al Golden is in his fourth season with the Miami Hurricanes and he’s still searching for a signature win. At least that’s one of the popular narratives going into this weekend’s game between the Canes and Florida State.

Golden is 0-3 against the Seminoles, but this season FSU appears vulnerable. At least that’s what UM fans have convinced themselves. It’s probably wishful thinking, but sometimes it’s irrational positive energy that produces life’s biggest upsets. At least that’s what Joe Goodman is telling himself after the Pro, Lee Sterling of ParamountSports.com, went 1-7 against the spread and 4-4 straight up last week. There is suddenly a glimmer of hope for Joe to take down the champ while he’s hurting.

Or not. After all, the Pro is 47-40 against the spread and 63-24 straight up. Joe went 4-4 against the spread and 6-2 straight and is now 38-49 against the spread and 60-27 straight up. Onto the picks!

Tulsa at Central Florida, UCF by 19

Joe

Seems like a lot of points for a Knights team ranked 87th nationally in scoring (25.8 points per game). UCF 32, Tulsa 14

Pro

Quadruple revenge for Knights and Tulsa’s pass “D” allowing 45 TD passes the last 1 1/2 seasons make Golden Hurricanes a fade only team. UCF 41, Tulsa 20

Nebraska at Wisconsin, Wisconsin by 6

Joe

This one will be an old-fashioned Midwest slugfest. Ameer Abdullah might not be at full strength (or even available), but I’m still going with the Cornhuskers. Nebraska 35, Wisconsin 28

Pro

Wisky’s top 5 rush “O” and total “D” both top-5 units. This is Big Ten football and I’ll roll with the better team in the trenches. Wisconsin 37, Nebraska 27

South Florida at Southern Methodist, USF by 11

Joe

The Mustangs have fallen on hard times without coach June Jones. South Florida is bad, but far superior to SMU. USF 42, SMU 25

Pro

As bad as SMU is, and they stink, how can you lay double digits on the road when your offense only averages 17 PPG? I’ll hold my nose and take the Mustangs. USF 31, SMU 24

Auburn at Georgia, UGA by 2.5

Joe

Tigers go in the tank after last week’s heartbreaking loss to Texas A&M. Georgia 35, Auburn 28

Pro

Bulldogs get back maybe the best player in the country, RB Todd Gurley, while Tigers lose their top WR D’haquille Williams. No late game magic for Auburn this round. Georgia 45, Auburn 24

South Carolina at Florida, UF by 7

Joe

Every week seems like another chance for Will Muschamp to lose his job. It’s getting old, and the Gators coach deserves some recognition for turning around his team. Still wouldn’t pick them to cover against Steve Spurrier, though. UF 28, South Carolina 25

Pro

Gamecocks have the edge at QB with Dylan Thompson over Treon Harris. They are also a stellar 67 percent play as an underdog since 2009. South Carolina 27, UF 26

Florida State at Miami, FSU by 1.5

Joe

Jameis Winston shines in the spotlight. FSU 36, Miami 18

Pro

With Jameis Winston at the controls the Seminoles have scored at least 31 points in every game in his one-plus seasons. I’m not sure Canes can match the most clutch player in college football. FSU 38, Miami 30

Middle Tennessee State at FIU, MTSU by 5

Joe

Blue Raiders quarterback Austin Grammer has performed well in conference games despite constantly playing with the shame of a misspelled surname. MTSU 31, FIU 15

Pro

Blue Raiders had a bye week to game-plan for a stingy FIU defense. They won’t need to game-plan for the abysmal FIU offense. MTSU 27, FIU 20

Mississippi State at Alabama, Alabama by 8.5

Joe

This line seems absurd, but then again Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott is a fumble machine. Shot in the dark here. Alabama 42, Mississippi State 20

Pro

Bama is a stone cold lock at home since 2008, going 43-3 SU. Someone forgot to tell Bulldogs Heisman hopeful QB Dak Prescott no one is giving his team a chance. Mississippi State 27, Alabama 24
