College football Week 5: Joe vs. The Pro

The trash talking has already started. After another awful week against the spread, Joe Goodman received a little pep talk from Lee Sterling, who suggested a “blind dog” could pick more college football winners. Joe isn’t ruling that out. He has a lot of respect for dogs.

Joe went 2-6 against the spread last week and 4-4 straight up. While Joe’s overall records (21-10 straight up and 13-18 against the spread) are already an embarrassment to the newspaper, the Pro is enjoying a run of greatness worthy of his reputation. He went 8-0 straight up last week and 6-2 against the spread to improve his overall records to 27-4 straight up and 22-9 against the spread.

In other words, the Pro’s record against the spread is better than Joe’s record straight up. On to the picks!

South Florida at Wisconsin, Wisconsin by 34

Joe

I’m ignoring that win against Connecticut. Still can’t shake the fact that the Bulls only gained 159 yards of offense against N.C. State and almost half that came on one play. Wisconsin 48, South Florida 7

Pro

South Florida a young QB on the road with a 39.3 percent completion percentage and no WR threats and it adds up to an offense in real trouble. Wisconsin 51, South Florida 13

Missouri at South Carolina, South Carolina by 5.5

Joe

Missouri lost to Indiana last week despite holding the Hoosiers to 1 of 14 on third downs. The Gamecocks have their shortcomings this season, but this might be a sophomore year for Mizzou in the SEC. South Carolina 28, Missouri 21

Pro

Gamecock OL can neutralize Missouri's strength which is their DL led by DE Markus Golden. Not many defensive stops in this contest. South Carolina 40, Missouri 31

Notre Dame at Syracuse, Notre Dame by 9.5

Joe

Irish defense is allowing an average of 2.5 yards per carry in its last two games. Notre Dame 31, Syracuse 21

Pro

Irish HC Brian Kelly is 15-5 ATS off a bye. QB Golson starting to get Heisman notice with his 11 rushing and passing TD's and no interceptions. Notre Dame 37, Syracuse 21

Tennessee at Georgia, Georgia by 17

Joe

Vols coach Butch Jones is building a solid base of young players in Knoxville, and Tennessee has had an extra week to prepare for its conference opener. Georgia 36, Tennessee 20

Pro

Different type of rushing attack but Vols fared well holding Oklahoma to just 146 rushing yards in misleading 34-10 loss. Bulldogs don't pass, defend the run or pass very well. Georgia 35, Tennessee 27

Duke at Miami, Miami by 7

Joe

That this game actually is in doubt before the kickoff lets you know how far the Canes have fallen. Miami 42, Duke 38

Pro

Memo to Al Golden: Your lack of defensive talent, poor defensive schemes and subpar DL and secondary coaching are your fault. You need to upgrade in all three areas quickly before you become a coaching casualty. Duke 42, Miami 38

Florida State at N.C. State, FSU by 19

Joe

Noles might not be 19 points better than anyone in the ACC right now, and the Wolfpack — historically a breaker of Noles’ hearts — is playing with confidence. FSU 34, N.C. State 28

Pro

Nole HC Jimbo Fisher looking for the right buttons to push with sputtering offense. Wolfpack amazingly 8-1 ATS in series and 4-0 ATS run at home vs Noles. FSU 45, N.C. State 28

FIU at UAB, UAB by 17

Joe

Blazers have a new coach and have figured out how to score points. UAB 45, FIU 15

Pro

Tough games vs Louisville and Pittsburgh might have taken starch out of Golden Panther "D". No time to breathe as Blazers JC transfer QB Cody Clements is the real deal. UAB 38, FIU 14

UT-San Antonio at FAU, UTSA by 5.5

Joe

Larry Coker has had two weeks to prepare his Roadrunners, who could end up making some noise in C-USA this season. UTSA 33, FAU 27

Pro

Roadrunners not so fast averaging just 3.9 yards per snap on offense. Owls are tough out as an underdog taking the money 16 of the last 21 times in that role. Wrong team favored. FAU 23, UTSA 21
