University of Miami basketball signee from Columbus is a McDonald’s All-American

Caleb Gaskins will have a chance to help Columbus continue its state championship streak in basketball in the coming weeks.

On Monday night, it was learned he had kept another run going for the Explorers when he became the third Columbus player in the past two seasons to be named a McDonald’s All-American.

Gaskins, a five-star prospect and 6-foot-8 power forward, also became the seventh University of Miami signee all-time to earn the honor. Gaskins joined Tito Horford (1985), Steve Edwards (1992), Darius Rice (2000), Dewan Hernandez (2016), Lonnie Walker IV (2017) and Jalil Bathea (2024).

Gaskins followed in the footsteps of Cameron and Cayden Boozer, the former Explorers turned freshmen standouts at Duke University, to be chosen to take part in the prestigious event, which will be held in Glendale, Arizona, on March 31 at 9 at the Desert Diamond Arena. The game will be broadcast on ESPN and the Sprite Jam Fest, a dunk contest featuring All-Americans, will take place on March 30, at 9:30.

Gaskins was also recently named to the Naismith Boys’ High School Player of the Year Midseason Team, and is the second-highest rated recruit in UM history in the 247Sports Composite rankings. Gaskins is ranked the No. 13 overall prospect by ESPN, No. 14 by Rivals and No. 20 by 247Sports.

Gaskins has led Columbus to a 19-6 record and a GMAC championship so far this season. The Explorers are preparing to make a run at what would be a fifth consecutive state title. If Columbus achieves that milestone, it would tie the state’s all-time best title streak and set the record for a Miami-Dade County school.

The Explorers next play in the District 15-7A tournament starting Thursday.
