Live updates: No. 18 Miami Hurricanes roll past Syracuse Orange
The No. 18 Miami Hurricanes keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive.
After a sluggish start, UM used a dominant finish to the first half to take a lead and carried that momentum over en route to a 38-10 win over the Syracuse Orange on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium.
Jakobe Thomas interception
Hurricanes safety Jakobe Thomas with one of the more interesting interceptions you’ll see. Ball bounced off Syracuse receiver Darius Johnson and into Thomas’ hands, but Thomas thought it was incomplete.
He eventually returned it to the Syracuse 23.
Hurricanes eat clock, score again
After another stop by the defense, Miami went 83 yards on nine plays over 4:52 capped by a 19-yard rushing touchdown by true freshman Girard Pringle Jr.
It’s 28-3 Miami over Syracuse with 2:25 left in the third quarter.
Keelan Marion big play touchdown
And THERE’S the big-play ability from Keelan Marion we’ve been waiting to see all season. Catch up the middle between two defenders and takes it 61 yards for a touchdown.
It’s 21-3 Miami over Syracuse with 9:57 left in the third quarter.
Miami holds Syracuse to field goal to start second half
Syracuse marches down the field but UM gets a third-down stop in the red zone.
Orange then hit with a delay of game. Syracuse hits the 38-yard field goal to end the eight-play, 55-yard drive.
Miami leads 14-3 with 11:12 left in the third quarter.
Stellar stop by defense to end the half
Syracuse marches to the UM 5, gets a false start to make it first and goal at the 10 ... and then loses the ball on a fumble.
Akheem Mesidor forces, Jakobe Thomas recovered.
Massive for the Canes, who take the 14-0 lead into halftime.
Pick-six Hurricanes
Keionte Scott pick six. 38-yards.
Just like that, Miami is up 14-0 on Syracuse.
Touchdown Hurricanes
Miami somehow orchestrated a 9-yard touchdown drive that heavily involved the team’s true freshmen.
Carson Beck found Daylyn Upshaw for 41 yards and then Josh Moore for 12 yards to set up first down from the Syracuse 14-yard line. Malachi Toney then threw a touchdown pass to Beck to cap the drive.
7-0 Miami late in the first half.
This offense has been rough to watch
Some numbers through Miami’s first four offensive drives, all of which have ended in punts:
-67 yards of offense
-Six first downs
-2.8 yards per play
-1 for 5 on third down
And this is against a Syracuse defense that has been porous.
Yeah... not good.
Scoreless after one quarter
Each team has had two drives.
Neither has crossed midfield.
It’s 0-0 after one quarter.
Defense get a stop, but monitor Rueben Bain
Miami’s defense got a stop on Syracuse’s first drive, which is good.
Star edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. went down the tunnel to the locker room during that drive, though, which is not good.
After a strong punt by Syracuse, Miami will start its second drive at its 2-yard line.
Notable defensive changes
Injuries once again forced some shakeups with Miami’s defense.
Justin Scott starts for a second consecutive week at defensive tackle alongside David Blay with Ahmad Moten out.
Xavier Lucas and Damari Brown are the starting outside corners with OJ Frederique sidelined.
Raul “Popo” Aguirre started at linebacker with Mo Toure.
Miami’s first drive stalls
A Carson Beck sack ultimately led to Miami’s first drive of the game stalling near midfield.
Starters on offense
With Mark Fletcher Jr. sidelined, sophomore Jordan Lyle started his second game of the season at running back. Lyle also started against Notre Dame in the season opener.
At wide receiver, sophomore Joshisa Trader started for a second consecutive week with CJ Daniels out. He was in the starting lineup alongside Malachi Toney and Keelan Marion, who have started every game this season.
Will Wesley Bissainthe and Ahmad Moten play?
Two Hurricanes starters on defense — linebacker Wesley Bissainthe and defensive tackle Ahmad Moten Sr. — are game-time decisions against Syracuse.
More clairty to come closer to the game.
