Miami linebacker out of hospital after tragic crash that killed woman, 2 children

Miami Hurricanes linebacker Adarius Hayes has been released from the hospital after being involved in a crash that killed three people in Largo on Saturday, the university said Monday.

Hayes, who remains on UM’s roster while the university gathers more information, was behind the wheel Saturday afternoon when his Dodge SUV crashed into a woman driving a Kia SUV near the Tampa area — killing her and two children, police said Sunday.

Gail Price, 78, Jabari Elijah Solomon, 10, and Charlie Herbert Solomon Riveria, 4, were identified as the three slain victims in the 1:45 p.m. crash at the intersection of Orangeview Drive and Ridge Road in Largo, Hayes’ hometown.

The fourth passenger in the Kia Soul, Herbert Rivera, 58, remained hospitalized with serious injuries, police said.

Hayes, 20, was hospitalized over the weekend before being released Monday. The two passengers in the Dodge Durango he was driving were treated for minor injuries and released Saturday.

A left turn

The collision Saturday afternoon occurred when Hayes was driving south on Ridge Road in a Dodge Durango. Price, driving northbound on Ridge Road, was making a left turn onto Orangeview Drive in her Kia Soul. Hayes hit Price’s car on the rear passenger side, Largo police said.

The children died on the scene; Price died Sunday at a hospital.

Police said “there were no signs of impairment with either driver” so no blood was drawn of either driver. No criminal charges were pending as of Monday, but the investigation isn’t close to finished.

At a Monday press conference, Largo Police Chief Mike Loux said he expects two to three weeks to pass before investigators determine whether charges will be filed. Two elements still unclear: how many passengers were wearing their seat belt and each car’s speed (Loux said the speed limit on the six-lane Ridge Road is 40 mph).

Regarding right of way, Loux said it’s up to the driver making the left turn to make sure they have the proper right of way before turning.

In a statement on Monday, the University of Miami said: “We are aware of a car crash that occurred on the afternoon of May 10 in Largo, Fla., involving student-athlete Adarius Hayes. Adarius was hospitalized and released, and we are currently working to gather more information.

“We are deeply saddened to learn the crash resulted in three fatalities, as confirmed by Largo Police, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those lost.”

Hayes’ previous driving incidents

A check of Pinellas, Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Monroe and Hillsborouh counties court records shows Hayes had his license suspended for a short time after one ticket in 2023.

Among his past incidents:

March 1, 2025: Hayes was ticketed for going 84 mph in a 55-mph zone in Clearwater. He paid a fine of $249.50, which was reduced by $31.50 after he took a driving course.

Nov. 12, 2024: Hayes paid a $166 fine after being cited for an improper lane change, “pulling out in front of a vehicle going the same direction,” in Miramar.

Nov. 20, 2023: Hayes paid a $166 fine after being ticketed for an improper lane change, “pulling out in front of a vehicle” in Largo.

Feb. 7, 2023: Hayes was ticketed for failure to use care in Largo. The ticket says he “operated the vehicle inattentively and unaware of surroundings, collided into (a) vehicle.” When he didn’t complete the driving school in March, his license was suspended on May 12, 2023. It was eventually reinstated May 26, 2023, after Hayes paid a total of $207.

Hayes, who grew up in Largo, appeared in 11 games for UM as a freshman last season, playing eight snaps on defense and 145 on special teams. He had four tackles and an interception in a Sept. 7 win against Florida A&M.

Hayes was a four-star prospect out of Largo High and chose UM over offers from Florida, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State, among others.

Rivals ranked him the No. 43 prospect nationally (and the No. 3 linebacker) in the 2024 recruiting class, 247 Sports ranked him 73rd overall and ESPN rated him 77th. He had 108 tackles as a senior at Largo High.
