UM reacquires player who just left and host a top linebacker in portal. And more visits
The whirlwind of activity happening nationwide because of the transfer portal continued at the University of Miami on Thursday when the Canes hosted one of the top linebackers in the portal and also welcomed back a player who entered the portal last week.
Receiver Ny Carr, who entered the transfer portal a week ago, has withdrawn and is returning to Miami, 247 Sports reported. Carr re-joins a receiver room featuring Jojo Trader, CJ Daniels, Ray Ray Joseph, Chance Robinson and freshmen Malachi Toney, Daylyn Upshaw and Joshua Moore.
UM also plans to add one or two receivers in the portal. Syracuse’s Trebor Pena, Cincinnati’s Tony Johnson and BYU’s Keelen Marion are among those who have visited or plan to. Miami also is pursuing Georgia Tech receiver Cam Hurst, who had 56 receptions for 961 yards and nine touchdowns last season.
Meanwhile, North Carolina State linebacker Kamal Bonner told multiple web sites that he’s visiting UM beginning Thursday evening. As a freshman last season, he started the Wolfpack’s final seven games and had 56 tackles (including seven for loss) and a sack.
Bonner can play middle and outside linebacker, and if he joins UM, he would have a decent chance to start alongside Wesley Bissainthe, though Raul Aguirre, Jaylin Alderman, Chase Smith and perhaps Bobby Pruitt would make it a very competitive battle.
Meanwhile, UM is meeting with at least five safeties in the portal this week — Big 12 All-Conference player AJ Haulcy from the Houston Cougars, Tennessee’s Christian Charles, Louisiana Monroe’s Wydett Williams, Kansas State’s Noah King and Florida’s Gregory Smith III. Smith played in four games for the Gators as a freshman last season, which qualified him for a redshirt. Haulcy is the most accomplished of the group and the only one of the five who would enter as a cinch to be a starter.
The Canes want to add at least one safety, which was a need even before Zaquan Patterson entered the transfer portal last week.
At other positions, UM is awaiting decisions from former North Dakota State running back CharMar Brown and ex-BYU defensive tackle Braxton Fely, who assuredly would join UM’s top-four tackle rotation (with David Blay, Justin Scott and Ahmad Moten) if he picks UM. Both players visited UM’s campus this week.
Offensive tackle to visit
UM is seemingly set at starting left tackle (Markel Bell) and right tackle (Francis Mauigoa). But UM is expected to hoist former South Carolina tackle Kam Pringle on a visit, per On3.com.
If he enrolls at Miami, he likely would spend a year developing behind Bell and Mauigoa, with possibly the opportunity to beat out Bell. Syracuse also is in play for the former four-star recruit, per on3.com’s Pete Nakos.
