Hurricanes schedule meetings with three more veteran safeties, including All-Big 12 player
The Miami Hurricanes, searching for at least one safety in the transfer portal, in the coming days will host visits with a Big 12 standout and a four-year Southeastern Conference veteran.
Houston safety A.J. Haulcy is scheduled to meet with the Hurricanes on Wednesday, 247 Sports reported, attributing the information to his NIL agent. He had 74 tackles, five interceptions and eight passes defended for the Cougars last season and was named first-team All-Big 12.
Haulcy spent two seasons at Houston after playing his freshman season at New Mexico, where he was named second-team All-Mountain West in 2022. The native of Missouri City, Texas, was a three-star recruit coming out of high school.
Meanwhile, safety Christian Charles plans to visit UM and Virginia, per on3.com. He has appeared in 30 games over four years for Tennessee and had 28 tackles last season.
His best season was in 2022, when he had 35 tackles. Charles, who missed the 2023 season because of a torn Achilles, has no career interceptions or sacks and just one pass defended in four years.
Also, Louisiana-Monroe safety Wydett Williams told 247 Sports that he’s visiting UM this week. He had 99 tackles, three interceptions and a sack last season, after a previous stint at Delta State.
Meanwhile, UM on Tuesday hosted Kansas State 6-2 safety/cornerback Noah King, a four-star Class of 2025 player who spent just one season in Manhattan, Kansas. “Miami blew me out the water,” King told Canesport.com.
If Haulcy joins the Hurricanes, he very likely would start alongside Jacksonville State transfer Zechariah Poyser, who impressed during spring practice.
If Charles or King joins the Canes (and Haulcy doesn’t), either could emerge as starters alongside Poyser but would need to beat out Markeith Williams, Dylan Day and freshmen Amari Wallace and Bryce Fitzgerald, as well as former Arizona player Isaiah Taylor, son of UM defensive line coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor.
Besides Haulcy and Charles, UM also has visits booked with highly-coveted Syracuse receiver Trebor Pena (who previously visited Penn State), BYU receiver and All-American kick returner Keelan Marion (who previously visited Arizona State and SMU) and Cincinnati receiver Tony Johnson, who was set to visit UM on Thursday after visits to UCF and Kentucky earlier this week.
On Tuesday, Miami hosted King, Boise State defensive tackle Braxton Feely (who had 5.5 sacks last season and is considering numerous suitors) and North Dakota State running back CharMar Brown, who also is considering Nebraska and California. All three players told multiple recruiting websites after their visits that their trip to Miami went well but they’re still going through the process of deciding where to play next season.
