Hurricanes lose receiver, edge player to portal but emerge as contenders for transfers

Receiver Ny Carr, one of the top prospects in UM’s 2024 recruiting class, is leaving the program, further reducing depth at a position that already was a portal priority.

Carr’s intention to enter the transfer portal, which he announced on Instagram, leaves UM with very thin depth at boundary receiver: Jojo Trader (who’s nursing an injury), transfer CJ Daniels (who was LSU’s No. 4 receiver last season), freshmen Joshua Moore and Daylyn Upshaw, and Chance Robinson, who wasn’t a big factor this spring.

UM has two promising slot receivers with Ray Ray Joseph and impressive freshman Malachi Toney.

But more is needed overall at the position.

UM and Texas Tech reportedly are top contenders for Syracuse receiver Trebor Pena, who is entering the portal.

Tabor, a slot receiver who also can play on the boundary, caught 84 passes for 941 yards (11.2 average) and nine touchdowns last season.

The Canes lost their top four receivers from last year’s team, with Xavier Restrepo, Sam Brown and Jacolby George moving onto the NFL and Isaiah Horton transferring to Alabama.

UM used at least four walk-on receivers in the spring, including Nick Thomas, Henry Pikus and Brennan Burton.

At least two more scholarship receivers likely will need to be added.

Carr, who had multiple catches in the spring game, caught three passes for 12 yards last season and played 53 offensive snaps.

247 Sports rated Carr the 21st-best receiver and 98th-best player overall in the 2024 class after he starred at Colquitt High in Moultrie, Georgia.

Meanwhile, UM is in the mix for UF transfer safety Gregory Smith III, according to Canesport.com. He played in four games with the Gators last season, earning a redshirt while allowing two of four passes in his coverage area to be caught for 17 yards.

He played for UM safeties coach Will Harris in Gainesville last season.

Besides receiver, the Canes are looking for help at safety and defensive tackle. UM lost two other players to the portal earlier this week: safety Zaquan Patterson and defensive tackle Joshua Horton. The second window for players to enter the portal opened Wednesday and runs for 10 days.

Rudolph leaves

Second-year edge player Elias Rudolph also announced intentions to leave. He played just four defensive snaps last season and faced competition with at least six other players for snaps behind starting defensive ends Reuben Bain and Akheem Mesidor.

Rudolph was rated by 247 Sports as the No. 29 edge player coming out of an Ohio high school in 2024.
