Hurricanes-Notre Dame date, time and network set for Labor Day weekend
The Miami Hurricanes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish decided a few months ago that they would renew their rivalry during Labor Day weekend in Miami Gardens.
On Thursday, they learned the date and time.
The Atlantic Coast Conference, in the process of unveiling its schedule over five days, announced that the Notre Dame-at-UM game will be played the Sunday of Labor Day weekend (Aug. 31) at 7:30 p.m. and be televised nationally on ABC. Notre Dame is coming off a 34-23 loss to Ohio State in Monday’s national championship game.
Also announced: Miami will open its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule at FSU on Oct. 4, following a bye week.
This year’s game will start a new seven-game series between the Canes and Fighting Irish.
Beginning in 1971, the two schools played 19 times over 20 seasons, and several of the games in the 1980s produced some of the more memorable moments in college football history.
But they have played only four times since 1990: Notre Dame wins in 2010 (the Sun Bowl), 2012 and 2016 and a 41-8 UM win in November 2017 at Hard Rock Stadium.
The teams were originally scheduled to play last season in South Bend, Indiana. But UM had a scheduling conundrum, with five nonconference games slated for four slots this past season. Instead, the Hurricanes and Fighting Irish agreed to move the 2024 game to 2026 in South Bend.
The teams previously agreed to play at Hard Rock Stadium in 2025. UM and Notre Dame are also scheduled to play in 2028 and 2031 and 2037 in South Bend, and in 2032 and 2034 in Miami.
UM also has tentative dates for its other 2025 nonconference games at Hard Rock Stadium: Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 6, the University of South Florida on Sept. 13 and Florida on Sept. 20.
The Canes also will play host to four Atlantic Coast Conference opponents: Louisville, North Carolina State, Stanford and Syracuse.
The Canes will leave South Florida only four times, to play ACC schools FSU, Pittsburgh, SMU and Virginia Tech.
The date and opponent for UM’s seven other ACC games (besides FSU) will be announced at 9 p.m. Monday on ACC Network.
The Hurricanes are playing eight regular-season home games for the first time since 1971.
The other particularly notable ACC dates announced Thursday: LSU at Clemson, Alabama at FSU and Georgia Tech at Colorado will be played on Saturday, Aug. 30, with times not yet announced.
The Labor Day night game, at 7 p.m. on ESPN, will match TCU against North Carolina, in Bill Belichick’s first game as Tar Heels coach.
