Cavinder, Roberts lead UM women to 62-56 ACC road win at Pitt. Canes improve to 9-1

The University of Miami women’s basketball team heads to the Maui Classic with a 9-1 record after beating Pitt 62-56 on the road Sunday.

Hanna Cavinder and Jasmyne Roberts led the Hurricanes in their ACC opener. Cavinder recorded a double-double with a game-high 22 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. She also had five assists and one steal.

Roberts scored 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc. She had a career-high five steals and grabbed three rebounds.

Cavinder’s twin sister Hanna also was a key to the win with eight points, five rebounds and a game-high six assists. Between them, the Cavinder twins contributed 30 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists.

The Hurricanes held Pittsburgh (6-6, 0-1) to 57 points on 34.5 percent shooting from the field and 27.3 percent from behind the arc.

As a team, Miami shot 40.7 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from behind the arc, and 75.0 percent at the free throw line, and the Canes recorded 16 assists on 24 made field goals.

Miami jumped out to a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter after limiting Pitt to 2-of-15 shooting from the field in the period.

The Canes wrap up non-conference play in Hawaii at the Maui Classic, where they will play Nevada Thursday at 12:30 a.m. (ET), before taking on Oregon State on Friday at 11 p.m. They are back home Dec. 29 at 4 p.m. against the 14th ranked North Carolina Tar Heels.
