The Miami Hurricanes have lost two important special-teamers for the season.

Kicker Matt Goudis and long snapper Ronnie Regula, both of whom have injuries, “will require surgery” and will not return this season, UM coach Al Golden said Wednesday on the Atlantic Coast Conference coaches’ teleconference.

Regula’s injury has not been disclosed, but Golden said Monday that it was “significant.” A walk-on senior out of Miami Palmetto High, Regula appeared to have a right-leg or knee injury when he was helped off the field late in the game Saturday against Cincinnati.

Regula, who also is a reserve fullback, will be replaced in the kicking operation by long snapper Frank Gabriel. Gabriel, a junior, has played in three games this season.

Goudis, a redshirt junior, has been plagued by a back injury since the offseason. This season he connected on four of six field-goal attempts and made all six extra points in the first two games. Golden indicated Monday that he will apply for a medical waiver for Goudis, to see if he can return as a junior next season.

Golden said practice, which was closed to the media Wednesday, “went really well.”

“Guys had a good attitude,” he said. “It was … Miami on Miami and then a little bit of an introduction to Virginia Tech.”
