Miami Canes QB great Gino Torretta on having his No. 13 jersey retired: ‘It’s awesome’
He already is in the College Football Hall of Fame.
He already is in the University of Miami Ring of Honor.
And as avid Miami Hurricanes fans well know, he won the Heisman Trophy for the 1992 season.
Now, Hurricanes great Gino Torretta is getting his newest honor — and it’s a rare one.
Miami announced Thursday that Torretta’s jersey No. 13 will be retired on Nov. 18 in UM’s final regular-season home game against Louisville.
“It’s awesome,’’ Torretta, 53, told the Miami Herald on Thursday. “A tremendous honor.
“There will be a bunch of guys I played with at the game.’’
Torretta’s No. 13 will join four other retired UM football jerseys: No. 10 (George Mira), No. 14 (Vinny Testaverde), No. 42 (Jim Dooley) and No. 89 (Ted Hendricks).
“I had the help of a lot of great coaches and a lot of great teammates,’’ Torretta said. “It brings back many great memories and a lot of success. The University of Miami helped shape me into who I am.’’
Torretta, 53, redshirted in his first season in 1988 under Jimmy Johnson before Dennis Erickson took over and led the Canes to national titles in 1989 and 1991. Torretta’s last season was ‘92. Torretta started on UM’s undefeated ‘91 team and led the Hurricanes to an undefeated regular season in ‘92.
“Gino is the most decorated college player in University of Miami football history and is also a member of our Ring of Honor, which serves as the highest honor for a Hurricanes football player or coach,’’ UM athletic director Dan Radakovich said in a school release. “We look forward to recognizing Gino and his family at Hard Rock Stadium.’’
Torretta still does a national radio broadcast of a college football game every Saturday for his company Touchdown Radio, and also is senior vice president for his investment firm Gabelli Asset Management. He is married to Bernadette and has a daughter, Aria, who is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
