After losing starting cornerbacks Tyrique Stevenson and DJ Ivey to the NFL, the Miami Hurricanes have been loading up at the position.

The Canes added one more Thursday night when junior college cornerback Demetrius Freeney of the College of San Mateo (California) pledged his commitment to the Hurricanes Class of 2023.

In his recent freshman season, Freeney, from San Leandro, California, was listed at 6-0 and 182 pounds, with 10 solo tackles, one fumble recovery and two interceptions — one returned for a touchdown. He has three years of eligibility remaining. He visited Coral Gables June 2.

“My Miami visit was a great experience,’’ he told CaneSport. “The best part was just interaction with the coaches. It was great to be able to see the family culture at that building, the generosity of the whole staff.’’

Freeney also visited Colorado, Oklahoma, Houston and Indiana.

The Canes added transfer Jadais Richard of Vanderbilt last month, as well as Oklahoma transfer Jaden Davis, who grew up in Fort Lauderdale and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School as a consensus four-star prospect.

UM recently lost former Iowa transfer Terry Roberts to Michigan State. Roberts announced his transfer to Miami in late January. He entered the transfer portal on June 1, according to On3.com, and has committed to the Spartans.

UM has veteran nickelback Te’Cory Couch. Recent additions before spring practice included UCF transfer Davonte Brown. UM also has former West Virginia transfer Daryl Porter Jr., who played in nine games last season, with one start, tallying 11 tackles (two for losses) and a pass breakup.

Brown’s younger brother Damari Brown, a fellow cornerback and 2023 Plantation American Heritage grad, has also joined the Canes.
