Podcast: Jacurri Brown and the rest of UM’s freshman class are reinvigorating Miami

In an unlikely twist, an injury to Tyler Van Dyke has actually reinvigorated the Miami Hurricanes.

Now, Miami is almost certainly worse right now than it would be with its star quarterback in the lineup, but this is already a lost season, so at least the Hurricanes are getting a chance to show off their shiny new freshman toy.

Jacurri Brown made his first career start Saturday and led Miami to a 35-14 win against Georgia Tech, and it was the most fun the Hurricanes have been in weeks. On a new episode of the Eye on the U podcast, David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Miami Herald’s Hurricanes beat writer, break down the quarterback’s rock-solid performance and look at all the freshmen surging for Miami in the last month of the regular season.

The present is grim, so the Hurricanes (5-5, 3-3 Atlantic Coast) are at least providing a glimpse of their promising future.

It’s not just about Brown, either. Miami started four freshmen last week -- and at least a handful of them will start again Saturday when the Hurricanes face the No. 9 Clemson Tigers in South Carolina -- and had another freshman catch a touchdown in a reserve role.

Linebacker Wesley Bissainthe made his first career start and was all over the field, offensive linemen Laurance Seymore and Anez Cooper started at the two guard spots and helped pave the way for nearly 200 rushing yards, and tight end Jaleel Skinner caught a touchdown from his roommate to highlight a banner day for Miami’s freshmen.

Even though it’ll be hard for them to replicate all their success this weekend in Clemson, they’re at least all getting a valuable chance to grow -- and show off to future recruits what’s in store in Coral Gables.
