Podcast: Fallout from Miami’s blowout loss to Florida State. Is it Jacurri Brown’s turn?

Another week, another awful performance for these Miami Hurricanes and they might have hit rock bottom Saturday with a 45-3 loss to the archrival Florida State Seminoles.

With Miami unlikely to make anything more than a minor bowl game, the Hurricanes had their Super Bowl over the weekend in Miami Gardens and got embarrassed on their home field.

Where do the Hurricanes and coach Mario Cristobal go from here? David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Miami Herald’s Hurricanes beat writer, talk through the fallout on a new episode of the Eye on the U podcast.

Should confidence be waning about Cristobal’s ability to turn around Miami? His debut season won’t determine whether he’s successful in Coral Gables, but he’s not providing a lot to be optimistic about in Year 1, although an increasingly astonishing rash of injuries isn’t doing him any favors.

Speaking of those injuries, Tyler Van Dyke’s status is once again in doubt after he left the Florida State game in the first half with an apparent shoulder injury and fellow quarterback Jake Garcia, once viewed as the heir apparent to Van Dyke, might have missed his chance to take the reins. After throwing another interception in the first half last week, fellow quarterback Jacurri Brown took over and finished out the game for Miami. The freshman now has a chance to establish himself as the favorite to be the Hurricanes’ next quarterback.

At this point of the season, the freshmen — and a still-impressive incoming recruiting class — are providing just about the only reasons for optimism in South Florida. Brown has a chance to give Miami a much-needed jolt if he gets the starting nod against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday in Atlanta.
