Podcast: Florida State preview, Cormani McClain’s stunning commitment and a hoops primer

It’s a busy time for the Miami Hurricanes. The Florida State Seminoles are coming to town, Mario Cristobal is picking up more major wins on the recruiting trail and basketball season is just about to begin.

The Eye on the U podcast covers it all this week with David Wilson, Susan Miller Degnan and Michelle Kaufman, the Miami Herald’s team covering the Hurricanes, tackling all the big topics.

It starts with Florida State -- the biggest game of the year -- and Wilson and Degnan set expectations and implications. Miami is optimistic quarterback Tyler Van Dyke could return, but Jake Garcia’s rocky first start Saturday shouldn’t be too much cause for panic. If he goes, Garcia will be the sixth different quarterback to start for the Hurricanes against the Seminoles in six years and five of them have picked up wins. The gap between these two teams isn’t so wide Garcia can’t join the list.

It’s a good chance for Cristobal to seize some momentum after a massively disappointing first half, too. Last week, the first-year coach pulled off an absolute stunner when he beat out the Florida Gators and Alabama Crimson Tide to land an oral commitment from Cormani McClain. The five-star cornerback is the No. 2 overall prospect in the 247Sports composite rankings for the Class of 2023 and his decision provides an important reminder: Never underestimate Cristobal as a recruiter.

In the second half of the episode, Kaufman joins Wilson to preview men’s and women’s basketball season, and break down all the transfers filling both rosters. Although Nijel Pack and Haley Cavinder steal most of the headlines, forward Norchad Omier might be just as big an addition for Miami and coach Jim Larranaga.
