The depth chart we kept wondering about is finally out.

Either new University of Miami coach Mario Cristobal was being super guarded for FCS-member Bethune-Cookman (doubtful) or he truly wasn’t sure until the very end (perhaps) — or it pained him to choose because there were multiple players capable of starting at various positions.

Or none of the above.

Whatever the reason, the Miami Hurricanes’ initial 2022 depth chart, as Cristobal previously suggested, still leaves some questions at some positions, with “Or” between several players.

Some names we know are starting, according to the depth chart: On defense: middle linebacker Corey Flagg, linebacker Waynmon Steed, defensive end Akheem Mesidor, star Te’Cory Couch, cornerbacks DJ Ivey and Tyrique Stephenson.

On offense: quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, center Jakai Clark, right guard Justice Oluwaseun, right tackle DJ Scaife, tight end Will Mallory and at receiver: Key’Shawn Smith, Michael Redding III and Xavier Restrepo.

No. 16 Miami, especially in the first few weeks of the season, will likely rotate heavily at several key positions.

The Hurricanes’ first major test comes Sept. 17, when they go on the road to face the No. 6 Texas A&M Aggies, and the first two early-season games (Sept. 10: Southern Miss) could give them an opportunity to sort out some of its remaining position battles before they go to College Station, Texas. They also, however, insist there are multiple positions where they won’t ever set true starters because they’re so deep with capable contributors.
