Podcast: Which of Miami’s issues are real concerns and which are just part of preseason?

The Miami Hurricanes are done with training and ready to start getting ready for the regular season.

In a few weeks, something like half of the story lines everyone has been worrying about will seem prophetic and the other half will have people wondering why it ever was even a concern.

To wrap up camp, the Eye on the U podcast is trying to suss through those topics that dominated August to figure out what’s really concerning and what’s not actually a big deal. David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Miami Herald’s Hurricanes beat writer, talk through it all, starting with some of the injury concerns mounting in Coral Gables.

A series of injuries in the last few weeks have sapped Miami of most of its depth at running back, leaving only Henry Parrish Jr. and Thaddius Franklin Jr. unscathed.

Meanwhile, star tackle Zion Nelson still has not been a full participant in practice yet this preseason, leaving his status for Game 1 against the FCS Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in jeopardy.

These two injury situations are cause for varying degrees of worry with the season less than two weeks away.

Other topics include the uneven play of the Hurricanes’ wide receivers, a lack of star power at linebacker and a quiet training camp for star defensive tackle Leonard Taylor, plus the offense’s seeming inability to best the defense at any point in fall camp.

Which of these are most concerning and which are not worth worrying too much about? Listen to find out what Wilson and Degnan think.

Next week, they’ll be back to really usher in the new year with a season preview ahead of Game 1 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
