The Mario Cristobal era is finally nearing something like an official start.

The Miami Hurricanes open training Friday with optimism they can contend in the Atlantic Coast Conference and even bigger hopes about the future beyond this year.

Still, there’s plenty we don’t know about how Miami will look this year. After wrapping up media day Tuesday, David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Hurricanes beat writer for the Miami Herald, convened for a new episode of the Eye on the U podcast to break down the five storylines we’re monitoring in the preseason.

It starts with the big piece of news from this week: Star tackle Zion Nelson had knee surgery last month and his injury could keep him out for the start of the regular season. Unfortunately, it means we won’t get a full glimpse of what the Hurricanes will look like this season until close to the end of camp.

The other major topic of focus is the front seven, which includes about half a dozen new transfers pushing for starting jobs, including defensive linemen Akheem Mesidor and Mitchell Agude, who officially joined the program in the offseason.

We also have our eye on the wide receivers, safeties and the offense, as a whole.

At wide receiver, Miami is still looking for successors to Mike Harley and Charleston Rambo. At safety, the Hurricanes need to find a way to get James Williams, Avantae Williams and Kamren Kinchens on the field at the same time. Above all else, we still don’t have a real idea of what offensive coordinator Josh Gattis’ offense will look like and, frankly, we’re still not expecting to see much until the season kicks off in September.

As always, thanks for listening and please continue to rate, review and subscribe on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
