Everything you need to know about ACC’s new scheduling model and what it means for Miami

The Atlantic Coast Conference will get rid of divisions in 2023 in favor of a so-called “3-5-5” scheduling model, in which each team will face three permanent, primary opponents on an annual basis and face the conference’s other 10 teams twice — once home and once away — in a four-year cycle.

For the Miami Hurricanes, it means annual match-ups with the Florida State Seminoles, Louisville Cardinals and Boston College Eagles, and a chance to host every other ACC team in Miami Gardens from 2023-2026. The model allows the league to keep annual rivalry games intact, while also letting each team play every other opponent in the conference on a more regular basis.

The Hurricanes also will no longer compete in the Coastal division after next season. Instead, the ACC Championship Game will be contested between the league’s top two teams, based on conference winning percentage.

The ACC’s new scheduling model follows a May decision by the NCAA Division I Council to deregulate a current rule limiting each conference’s autonomy in determining championship-game participants. ACC athletic directors and faculty representatives voted on the new format Tuesday.

With the new format, Miami’s conference opponents are now set for 2023-2026, although order of games still has not been determined. The league will continue to play eight conference games per year, with the Hurricanes hosting four at Hard Rock Stadium and playing four on the road. The Championship Game will remain in Charlotte, played each year during the first weekend in December.
