Podcast: Roland Smith’s role with Miami football and a Hurricanes baseball collapse

It’s officially the offseason for the Miami Hurricanes.

Miami’s baseball season came to a stunning, sudden end Saturday with back-to-back losses to the Ole Miss Rebels and Arizona Wildcats in the Coral Gables Regional. As the No. 6 overall seed, the Hurricanes were the top-ranked team to not make it to Super Regionals in the 2022 NCAA tournament.

What’s next, then, for Miami? The Hurricanes haven’t made it out of Regionals since they went to the College World Series back in 2016, but don’t expect major changes. David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Miami Herald’s Hurricanes beat writer, dive into what athletic director Dan Radakovich might be thinking and what this season could mean for Miami’s future.

As ugly as the ending was, the Hurricanes still have reasons for optimism and an extension could be imminent for coach Gino DiMare. The pressure will be on next year, though, when these young Hurricanes won’t be quite so young anymore.

Even though summer is almost here, there’s still some football news, too. Miami finally officially announced the hire of Roland Smith — he has been working at the school for more than three months — and the legendary high school coach will be the director of high school relations at his alma mater.

This move won’t make the same sort of national headlines as the additions of Jason Taylor as an analyst or Charlie Strong as a linebackers coach, but Smith is another massive addition for coach Mario Cristobal. Smith’s seven Florida High School Athletic Association championships at Miami Central and Northwestern are tied for the most in South Florida history, and coaches across Miami-Dade County are part of his coaching tree.
