Podcast: Miami’s Draft streak lives! And ranking all 11 UM transfer additions (so far)
The Miami Hurricanes’ NFL Draft streak lives.
With the 29th-to-last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers selected Jonathan Ford, meaning Miami has now had a player picked in 48 straight Drafts.
It was pretty hairy, though, and it’s a grim coda to the Manny Diaz era in Coral Gables, David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Hurricanes beat writer for the Miami Herald, argue on a new episode of the Eye on the U podcast.
After a quick recap of the 2022 Draft, Wilson and Degnan dive into the transfer portal for the meat of the episode, running through the 11 players the Hurricanes have added since coach Mario Cristobal took over, and examining their potential fits in 2022 and beyond.
Although the group might lack obvious star power, the sheer number of transfers is the new normal in college football and Cristobal is smartly using the portal to fill major needs — and build some depth — in the trenches and at linebacker.
At the top of the list is Akheem Mesidor, who has a chance to be a star defensive lineman for Miami after earning all-Big 12 Conference honors with the West Virginia Mountaineers.
Yes, there is a full list: Wilson ranked all 11 in terms of both short-term expectations and long-term upside, and let Degnan pick it apart.
For reference, here’s the full list, with the players’ positions and previous school:
1. Akheem Mesidor, DL, West Virginia
2. Caleb Johnson, LB, UCLA
3. Daryl Porter Jr., CB, West Virginia
4. Antonio Moultrie, DL, UAB
