Source: Miami Canes LB Wesley Bissainthe injures ankle in deadly car accident

University of Miami freshman linebacker Wesley Bissainthe on Friday evening was the passenger in a car accident in which the 52-year-old driver of the other car was killed.

A traffic accident report from Miami-Dade police described the accident but did not list the names of most of the people in the vehicles. A source confirmed to the Miami Herald that Bissainthe was a passenger.

Bissainthe, an early enrollee at UM and a former star at Miami Central High School who just graduated, cut his ankle and needed stitches to repair it, the source said. He was traveling with four others who were teammates at defending state champion Central, the source added.

The driver of Bissainthe’s car is listed as Zaylan Reese, 18, per police. Reese, a Central High receiver who signed a scholarship to play at Division II Valdosta State, “was transported to Jackson North,’’ police said. The release said that “his four occupants were transported to Joe DiMaggio Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.’’

Two sources confirmed that the teenagers did not have life-threatening injuries.

A source said Miami Central center Jason Bissainthe, who signed with ASA College, a junior college in Hialeah, was one of the passengers with Wesley. It’s unclear if or how they are related.

UM did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The driver who died was listed by Miami-Dade police as Saul Dauphin, 52.

The accident occurred on Ives Dairy Road, when Dauphin’s Lexus, traveling eastbound, per the police release, made a left turn in the path of Reese’s westbound Mercedes, “causing both vehicles to crash. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and pronounced Mr. Saul Dauphin deceased on the scene.’’

Bissainthe was the Miami Herald’s Miami-Dade Co-Defensive Player of the Year after helping lead Central to three consecutive state titles.
