Miami lands commitment from intriguing Australian offensive lineman Frankie Tinilau
The Miami Hurricanes continue to beef up the offensive line in their Class of 2023, and this time they’re going international — and local.
Frankie Tinilau, an under-the-radar Australian prospect from Miami La Salle High, orally committed to Miami on Monday, announcing his commitment on Twitter.
“Let’s make this thing official,” he tweeted, alongside a graphic of himself edited into a Hurricanes jersey.
Tinilau is originally from Australia and recently moved to the United States, enrolling at the Miami private school. Although he’s unranked as a tackle in the 247Sports.com composite rankings, Tinilau has ideal size at 6-foot-6 and 315 pounds, and he gathered interest throughout the fall and into the spring. He took a pair of unofficial visits to Coral Gables last month before committing to the Hurricanes.
Tinilau has nearly a dozen scholarship offers from teams, including the Florida State Seminoles, Maryland Terrapins and Arizona State Sun Devils.
Miami now has two offensive lineman committed in its 2023 recruiting class. Antonio Tripp Jr., a three-star interior lineman from Maryland, also committed to the Hurricanes in March.
Rebuilding the offensive line has been a priority for new coach Mario Cristobal since he took over late last year, and his efforts on the recruiting trail have mirrored his focus.
In his short time as coach for the 2022 recruiting cycle, Cristobal added multiple lineman to Miami’s Class of 2022 by landing commitments from three-star prospects Matthew McCoy and Anez Cooper, and the coach has also been active in the transfer portal. In January, offensive lineman Logan Sagapolu decided to follow Cristobal from the Oregon Ducks to South Florida and Jonathan Denis, who starred at Homestead South Dade High before spending two seasons at Oregon, decided to do the same Sunday.
The Hurricanes now have five players committed to their 2023 class and four currently play in Miami-Dade County.
