Miami adds transfer at big position of need with all-conference UCLA star Mitchell Agude
The Miami Hurricanes are filling a major position of need with reinforcements from the transfer portal.
Mitchell Agude orally committed to Miami on Friday after wrapping up an official visit in Coral Gables. The linebacker was a second-team all-conference selection last season for the UCLA Bruins.
Agude announced his commitment on Instagram.
“Y’all remember the last time a kid went from UCLA to the U,” Agude wrote, alluding to — and even tagging — Jaelan Phillips, who was an All-American for the Hurricanes and now plays linebacker for the Miami Dolphins, “let’s run up the sequel.”
The Hurricanes beat out the Oregon Ducks and Washington Cougars to land the 6-foot-4, 245-pound edge rusher. Agude previously planned to visit the Tennessee Volunteers, too, but canceled his visit after traveling to Miami earlier in the week.
Agude has one season of eligibility remaining.
Whether he winds up on the defensive line or at linebacker, Agude will help the Hurricanes fill a gap on their defense. Miami is trying to replace both its starting defensive ends and is still looking for three reliable starting linebackers after the position was a weakness last year.
Agude will likely play defensive end for the Hurricanes. He had 55 tackles, two sacks, 6 1/2 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and two passes defended last year, and 23 tackles, 2 1/2 sacks, eight tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and a pass defended the year before.
Agude is originally from Corona, California, and played at Santiago, but was lightly recruited in the Class of 2017. He wound up at Riverside Community College in California and caught the attention of the Bruins, heading to Los Angeles as part of their Class of 2020. He was a contributor in both of his two seasons in the Pac-12 Conference before he decided to enter the transfer portal last month.
Mario Cristobal has now added three defensive lineman via transfer since taking over as coach. Jake Lichtenstein transferred from the USC Trojans last year and Antonio Moultrie transferred from the UAB Blazers in January. Both are currently participating in spring practice.
