Podcast: Jason Taylor to Miami, and our five biggest questions going into spring practice

The Miami Hurricanes will have another Hall of Famer in their midst this season.

Somehow, Mario Cristobal’s Miami coaching staff keeps getting stronger.

Jason Taylor is joining the Hurricanes, the Miami Herald confirmed Thursday, and he’s coming to Coral Gables in an off-the-field role. It might just be the biggest splash Cristobal has made yet. On a New Episode of the Eye on the U podcast, David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Hurricanes beat writer for the Miami Herald, explain why.

Taylor was a superstar for the Miami Dolphins and has become one of the best high school coaches in the country at St. Thomas Aquinas. The coach should help open up the Hurricanes’ pipeline at the Fort Lauderdale powerhouse and be a major boon for Miami’s edge rushers.

Taylor wasn’t the only hire of the day, though. With spring practice fast approaching, the Hurricanes also hired Rod Wright to be their new defensive ends coach, FootballScoop.com reported Thursday. If he in fact keeps Stephen Field on as tight ends coach, Cristobal officially has his 10-coach staff in place.

Speaking of spring, the second half of the episode is dedicated to a practice preview. The Hurricanes are set to begin spring football Monday and the Eye on the U podcast poses five major questions, including: How will the lines shape up after major attrition? Who might step up as the No. 1 wide receiver? What are rising stars Leonard Taylor and James Williams going to look like after impressive freshman seasons?

These are the table-setters for Miami as it gets ready to hit the field for the first time with Cristobal as coach. There’s one question hovering above everything else, though: What will the Hurricanes look like with Cristobal in charge?
