Miami adds more help from transfer portal with former American Heritage CB Daryl Porter
Daryl Porter Jr. left South Florida to go play for the West Virginia Mountaineers back in the Class of 2020. Now he’s headed back toward home to play for the Miami Hurricanes.
Porter, who starred at Plantation American Heritage before going to West Virginia, announced he’s transferring to Miami on Thursday, picking the Hurricanes over the Florida State Seminoles, LSU Tigers and Oregon Ducks.
The cornerback announced his decision on Twitter after putting out his top four Monday.
Porter will have three years of eligibility remaining once he gets to Coral Gables and he should compete for a starting job in the secondary. Porter started at corner for the Mountaineers in 2021 and had 46 tackles, five passes defended and one interception. He was targeted 53 times, according to Pro Football Focus, and allowed 34 catches for 416 yards and three touchdowns.
Porter is the sixth transfer to join Miami this offseason, the third on defense and the first in the secondary. It’s too late for him to be on campus for spring practice, but he should be able to join the Hurricanes in June.
In high school, Porter was a three-star cornerback, according to the 247Sports.com composite rankings for the 2020 recruiting class, and had more than 20 scholarship offers. Daryl Porter, the defensive back’s father, is American Heritage’s running backs coach and played five seasons in the NFL.
Last year, Miami started four different players at cornerback — Tyrique Stevenson, DJ Ivey, Te’Cory Couch and Marcus Clarke — and cornerback Al Blades Jr. also has starting experience. While Stevenson was an honorable mention on the all-Atlantic Coast Conference team and is likely to handle one starting spot in 2022, there should be a wide-open competition to start opposite Stevenson and Porter has as much of a track record as anyone.
