Miami makes it official with new secondary coach from national champ Georgia Bulldogs
The Miami Hurricanes football coaching staff is almost complete.
The University of Miami on Wednesday officially announced the hiring of new secondary coach Jahmile Addae, who spent 2021 coaching defensive backs for the national champion Georgia Bulldogs.
Addae’s departure was initially reported on Feb. 7 without confirmation from UM.
Known as a strong recruiter, Addae was ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 2 recruiter for the Class of 2022. He replaces former UM DB coach Travaris Robinson, who was just hired by Alabama.
If tight ends coach Stephen Field remains at that spot, the Hurricanes would have two slots left to fill among the 10 position coaches allowed by the NCAA. It is believed cornerbacks coach DeMarcus Van Dyke will move to a new role on the staff. A special teams coordinator also has yet to be named. New defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is expected to lead the linebackers.
“Jahmile Addae is a gamechanger for our staff,” UM coach Mario Cristobal said. “His units rank among the nation’s top-performing units every year. He has championship experience, he is one of the nation’s top recruiters, and he has fostered a culture of mental and physical toughness in the secondary at every stop of his career. Coach Addae is a tremendous addition to our program, and I know he will make his impact felt on our defensive identity.”
This past season at Georgia, the Bulldogs were 13th nationally in passing yards allowed (190.1 per game) and eighth nationally with 16 interceptions.
The Bulldogs were No. 1 in scoring defense, No. 1 in red zone defense and No. 2 in total defense.
“I’m excited. A lot of people have talked about bringing The U back,” Addae, 37, said. “I like to think of it as, The U never left. It’s more about doing our diligence and making sure we’re developing the caliber of players that people are used to here at the University of Miami.
“I remember playing against Miami when they were on a 34-game winning streak. It was Ken Dorsey, Andre Johnson, Bryant McKinnie…all the big names that we know. Those were some daunting teams. You walked out on that field and you felt the presence of those guys. That is what we’re trying to bring back. How do you do that? Win football games and develop talent.”
Addae is from Valrico, and came to Georgia in January 2021 after coaching DBs at West Virginia for two years. Addae was an all-conference safety when he played at West Virginia, and as a coach there in 2020 he led a Mountaineers passing defense that ranked first nationally in fewest passing yards allowed (159.6 per game). That year the Mountaineers were fourth in total defense and had 11 interceptions.
Addae also has been an assistant at Minnesota (DBs, special teams), Arizona (DBs), Cincinnati (RBs) and Michigan (GA, DBs Scout team).
