Miami announces new Canes offensive coordinator. He’s the reigning Broyles Award winner
Josh Gattis agreed to become the University of Miami’s offensive coordinator this past weekend.
On Wednesday, the Hurricanes made it public when they announced his hiring.
Gattis, 38, this past season won the Broyles Award that goes to the top assistant in college football. Gattis had been the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach the last three seasons at Michigan.
Michigan, which began the season unranked, reached the College Football Playoff for the first time before falling to the eventual national champion Georgia Bulldogs in the 2021 Capital One Orange Bowl. Gattis was also previously the co-offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide, helping Alabama reach the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship in his lone season in Tuscaloosa.
“I’m fired up to add Josh Gattis to our staff as offensive coordinator,” Cristobal said in the release. “Josh has championship experience and has achieved the highest honor as an assistant coach. He is a phenomenal human being, has exceptional acumen in player development and is a tremendous recruiter. His offenses are explosive and well-balanced, and his passion, ambition and energy will separate him as a difference maker for our offense and for our program.”
“It’s a tremendous honor to be here,’’ Gattis said. “I grew up in ACC land, and I’ve always had the utmost respect for this program. When you look at the history, the tradition and the legacy of this place, Miami is one of the most storied programs in all of college football. When the opportunity came up to be a part of this program, it was one that I just couldn’t turn down. We’ve got an unbelievable staff and I’m really, really excited about Coach Cristobal’s vision.”
After starring as a safety for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and playing one season in the NFL for the Chicago Bears, Gattis began his coaching career in 2010 as a graduate assistant for the North Carolina Tar Heels when former Miami coach Butch Davis was in Chapel Hill. After one year, he became the wide receivers coach for the Western Michigan Broncos, then left again after one year to take the same position with the Vanderbilt Commodores. He spent two seasons in Nashville, then three as the wide receivers coach for the Penn State Nittany Lions before he joined the Alabama Crimson Tide for one season in 2018.
