Miami beats out LSU, Florida for All-American RB TreVonte’ Citizen on signing day

The Miami Hurricanes have gone into Louisiana and beaten out the LSU Tigers for one of the state’s best recruits.

TreVonte’ Citizen, an All-American running back from Lake Charles College Prep, committed to Miami on national signing day, spurning his home-state team, as well as several other Southeastern Conference suitors, to head to South Florida.

Citizen, a four-star prospect, revealed his decision Wednesday in a ceremony at his high school, and the Hurricanes officially announced him as part of their class shortly thereafter, indicating he sent in his national letter of intent.

While Miami has built a deep running backs room in recent years, Citizen is the highest-ranked player the Hurricanes have landed at the position since five-star running back Lorenzo Lingard committed in the Class of 2018, according to 247Sports.com’s composite rankings.

Citizen is the No. 9 running back in the nation and the No. 107 prospect overall. The 6-foot, 217-pound tailback will immediately add extra depth to a group which already includes running backs Donald Chaney Jr., Jaylan Knighton, Thaddius Franklin Jr., Cody Brown and now Henry Parrish, who transferred to Miami from the Ole Miss Rebels last month.

It makes Citizen somewhat of a luxury for the Hurricanes, but he has a chance to be Miami’s every-down back in the next couple years, which is why coach Mario Cristobal and Co. made him a major target in the last two months.

Citizen, who played in the All-American Bowl last month, took an official visit to Coral Gables over the weekend, then officially announced his top four as the trip wrapped up Sunday. The Hurricanes ultimately beat out the Florida Gators, Auburn Tigers and LSU to land the blue-chip athlete.

Citizen, who spent more than four months orally committed to LSU last year, played in only six games as a senior for Lake Charles and still ran for 743 yards and 11 touchdowns on 65 carries. He also played linebacker throughout most of high school and broke up one pass in 2021.
