Miami adds massive offensive lineman to recruiting class on national signing day
The Miami Hurricanes have started adding to their Class of 2022 on national signing day.
Anez Cooper, a gigantic offensive lineman from Pleasant Grove in Alabama, orally committed to Miami on Wednesday, just three days after wrapping up his first and only official visit in Coral Gables. The 6-foot-6, 352-pound tackle is the first offensive lineman to join the Hurricanes’ class as Mario Cristobal is working hard to build up Miami’s trenches.
A three-star prospect in the 247Sports.com composite rankings for the 2022 recruiting cycle, Cooper announced his commitment in a ceremony at Pleasant Grove High School.
Cooper is one of the Hurricanes’ newest targets, only landing a scholarship offer from Miami on Jan. 21. Cristobal and defensive line coach Joe Salave’a did an in-home visit with Cooper on Monday ahead of his trip to South Florida, and the Hurricanes’ late push was enough to convince him to come to Miami. The Oregon Ducks were also involved in the senior’s recruitment.
He’ll be able to sign his national letter of intent on Wednesday and officially join the Hurricanes’ 2022 recruiting class.
Miami hopes Cooper won’t be the only offensive lineman to officially join the class Wednesday. The Hurricanes are also in contention to land four-star tackle Dave Iuli from Payallup in Washington and three-star St. Johns Creekside tackle Matthew McCoy. They also hope to land Josh Conerly Jr. in the next month or so, but the five-star tackle from Rainier Beach in Seattle, who also spent the weekend at Miami for an official visit, plans to wait until March to sign his letter of intent.
As for the Hurricanes’ five other official visitors this weekend, Miami will have to wait until later Wednesday for most other decisions. Five-star Monsignor Pace defensive lineman Shemar Stewart, and R Mason Thomas and Ahmad Moten, a pair of three-star defensive linemen from Cardinal Gibbons, are all slated to announce their commitments on signing day.
