Podcast: What are the odds UM adds a 5-star on Signing Day? And Miami basketball madness
National Signing Day is always one of the most exciting days on the calendar. Since Mario Cristobal has gotten to South Florida, it’s starting to feel like a downright holiday for the Miami Hurricanes.
With Signing Day less than a week away, Cristobal and Miami are using the final weekend weekend of the 2022 recruiting cycle to host a massive slate of official visitors, including a pair of five-star prospects.
On a new Eye on the U podcast, David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Hurricanes beat writer for the Miami Herald, preview NSD by handicapping the Hurricanes’ chances to make a five-star splash Wednesday.
Josh Conerly Jr., a five-star tackle from Rainier Beach in Seattle, is probably the most intriguing name on the list because of the position he plays and Miami’s shoddy history at recruiting offensive lineman, and also because the Hurricanes had no shot at him until Cristobal took over last month. Part of the promise in bringing Cristobal to Miami was the idea he would transform the offensive line from a weakness into a strength and he’s putting some good signs in his first few months.
Shemar Stewart, a five-star defensive lineman from Monsignor Pace in Miami Gardens, is the most important name, though. It’s great to see Cristobal recruit across the country, but his success in Coral Gables will be determined by how well he can recruit Miami-Dade and Broward counties, and Stewart is the best prospect in the region, according to the 247Sports.com composite rankings.
The Hurricanes’ men’s basketball team is becoming increasingly impossible to ignore, too. On Wednesday, Miami got its craziest win of the year when guard Charlie Moore banked in a halfcourt shot at the buzzer to beat the Virginia Tech Hokies, 78-75, in Blacksburg, Virginia.
It was a thrilling win, obviously, and it also tells us something important about this team: The Hurricanes (15-5, 7-2 Atlantic Coast) are never going to be out of a game.
As always, please continue to rate, review and subscribe, and we’ll be back next week to recap National Signing Day and, in all likelihood, some more important basketball games.
