Podcast: Tyler Van Dyke gets his shot at Miami-Florida State. And quick hoops thoughts
It’s the biggest week of the year for the Miami Hurricanes and the Florida State Seminoles.
It’s rivalry week.
Miami will trek up to Tallahassee this weekend with a chance to clinch bowl eligibility and make sure Florida State won’t make a bowl this season. Manny Diaz will put his undefeated record against his alma mater on the line and Tyler Van Dyke will try to uphold a quirky new Miami tradition.
With a win, Van Dyke would become the fifth different Hurricanes quarterback to beat the Seminoles in the last five years.
On a new episode of the Eye on the U podcast, David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Miami Herald’s Hurricanes beat writer, preview Miami-Florida State and examine the still-growing legend of Van Dyke. He’s still only six starts into his college career, so a trip up to Doak Campbell Stadium will be another good test for the second-year freshman.
The Seminoles will test the Hurricanes (5-4, 3-2 Atlantic Coast) in other ways, too. Florida State’s defensive line is the best Miami has faced since at least the Michigan State Spartans, offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee said, and the game-day atmosphere will be unlike anything this freshman-laden roster has seen in their brief careers. For Van Dyke, it’s another chance to prove his calm, cool and collected demeanor can be consistent in any situation. Florida State will test him with its crowd and its pass rush.
At the very end, Wilson offers up some basketball thoughts after covering opening night Tuesday. Coach Katie Meier set the wins record in a too-close-for-comfort victory against the Jackson State Tigers and coach Jim Larranaga’s team followed it up with a double-digit win against the Canisius Golden Griffins, providing some glimpses as to why there’s some real optimism in Coral Gables this season.
As always, please continue to rate, review and subscribe to the show. There’s no better week to tune in than rivalry week.
