UM, BYU schedule home/home series. Last time the teams met was not good for No. 1 Canes
The last time the Miami Hurricanes and BYU Cougars met in football, it wasn’t pretty for the visiting Hurricanes, who were ranked No. 1 after coming off a national championship capped by a win against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.
Maybe next time it will be better.
Miami and BYU will play again in 2026, but this time the game will be at Miami.
The programs have scheduled a home-and-home series, the Hurricanes announced Thursday. The first game will be the UM home game in 2026, followed by a 2028 game in Provo, Utah.
“We are excited to add BYU to our future football schedule,” UM athletic director Blake James said in a released statement. “We remain committed to scheduling top programs for our non-conference games and showcasing The U across the country.”
That last meeting between the programs in 1990? A 28-21 BYU win in front of 66,235 fans.
UM and BYU met one other time before that, in 1988, When the No. 2 Hurricanes defeated BYU 41-17 in the Orange Bowl.
Miami finished 10-2 in 1990, its only other loss 29-20 at Notre Dame. The Canes travel to Notre Dame in 2028 as well. They also host USF in ‘28.
In 2026, UM will travel to South Carolina and will host Florida A&M.
The BYU road game will mark Miami’s farthest trip west in the regular season since 2000, when the Hurricanes lost at Washington. UM went on to win its next 34 games and won its last national title after the 2001 season.
Senior Bowl Watch List
The Reese’s Senior Bowl released its 2022 watch list on Thursday, and nine Hurricanes made the first cut.
The nine: Quarterback D’Eriq King, wide receiver Dee Wiggins, running back Cam’Ron Harris, defensive tackles Nesta Jade Silvera and Jonathan Ford, cornerbacks Al Blades Jr. and DJ Ivey and safeties Bubba Bolden and Gurvan Hall Jr.
The Senior Bowl will be played at Hancock Whitney Stadium at the University of South Alabama on January 29, 2022. The game “showcases the best NFL draft prospects of those players who have completed their college eligibility,’’ the website says.
Among the other obvious Hurricanes that could play in this game but were left off the watch list: receiver Mike Harley, punter Lou Hedley, striker/safety Amari Carter; offensive linemen Navaughn Donaldson and Jarrid Williams; and defensive ends Deandre Johnson and defensive end Zach McCloud.
