Miami Hurricanes leap in the AP Top 25 Poll to set up top-10 showdown with Clemson

The Miami Hurricanes are legit, at least according to the newest rankings.

Even with the Big Ten and Pac-12 and all the college football teams included in Sunday’s newest AP Top 25 ranking, the Hurricanes rose four spots to No. 8 to set up a compelling showdown on Oct. 10 at No. 1 Clemson.

The Canes also rose to No. 8 in the Amway Coaches Poll, a rise of six spots.

UM had a dominating 52-10 win on national television Saturday night against the Florida State Seminoles at Hard Rock Stadium, eliciting praise from national broadcasters and college football types.

Some of the major conferences and other teams were left out of the rankings in recent weeks because they had not had their seasons set to go in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is the highest Canes’ AP ranking during a season since they were No. 7 in Week 11 of the AP poll in 2017, the year they started 10-0 and got as high as No. 2 before they lost their last three games and dropped to No. 13 for the year. They started at No. 18 in the 2018 preseason.

Miami has gone from AP No. 17 to 12 to 8 after victories over UAB, Louisville and now FSU.

UM coach Manny Diaz and D’Eriq King made it clear after Saturday’s victory that the Canes must buckle down and focus more than ever these two weeks, something they haven’t done very well in recent seasons.
