Miami Canes ranked for first time since 2018, heading to top-20 matchup at Louisville
Suddenly, the Miami Hurricanes are in the top 20 of college football.
Sure, it likely was the result of the absence of Big Ten and Pac-12 competition because of COVID-19, but the Hurricanes did what they had to do — won their opener — and on Sunday were ranked No. 17 in the first Associated Press Poll, heading for a top-20 matchup at No. 18 Louisville.
UM was also ranked in the Amway Coaches Poll, coming in at No. 18. The Cards were No. 16 in that poll.
The Canes (1-0) and Louisville (1-0) will meet at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Cardinal Stadium (ABC).
Both teams were unranked in the preseason, because the AP included all the teams in the previous ranking, whether or not their leagues had canceled or postponed games in the fall. The last time UM appeared in the AP Top 25 Poll was Oct. 7, 2018. The Last time the Canes were in the coaches poll was Oct. 21, 2018.
UM, behind a strong debut by graduate transfer quarterback D’Eriq King and the Canes’ running game, beat UAB 31-14 in the season opener Thursday night.
Louisville defeated Western Kentucky 35-21 in its Saturday opener at home.
The Clemson Tigers, which beat Wake Forest 37-13 on Saturday, is No. 1 in the AP Poll. The Tigers host the Hurricanes on Oct. 10 in Clemson, South Carolina.
