Canes stay red hot on recruiting trail as versatile DE Thomas Davis commits to Miami

Another day, another commitment for the Miami Hurricanes and this time they’re actually reaching out of South Florida.

Thomas Davis, a three-star defensive end from Georgia, orally committed to Miami on Monday, announcing his pledge on Twitter.

Davis is the second player to commit to the Hurricanes in as many days, following three-star Pinecrest Palmetto wide receiver Brashard Smith, who committed to Miami on Sunday. The Hurricanes also secured a commitment from five-star Plantation American Heritage athlete James Williams on Tuesday and locked in a commitment from four-star Miami Columbus defensive end Jabari Ishmael on July 17.

Davis originally set a commitment date for August, but instead to commit Monday as the Hurricanes’ Class of 2021 rapidly fills up. Davis is the 21st member of the recruiting class and only the second player from outside Florida to commit to Miami so far this cycle.

Although he’s only the No. 867 overall prospect in the 247Sports.com composite rankings for the 2021 class, Davis was massively productive last season for Valdosta’s Lowndes. The edge rusher had 47 tackles, 16 1/2 tackles for loss and a team-leading 11 1/2 sacks with one fumble recovery for the Vikings, who reached the state championship game. Davis also had two catches for 103 yards and a touchdown in limited action as a tight end. Lowndes finished the 2019 season as the No. 13 team in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 and begins 2020 as the nation’s No. 10 team.

Davis picked the Hurricanes from a top three which also included the Florida State Seminoles and South Carolina Gamecocks. He originally committed to the Mississippi State Bulldogs in April before he backed off from his pledge in June. Miami offered Davis in April and managed to secure his commitment without the defensive lineman ever visiting Coral Gables.

The 6-1, 235-pound senior gives Hurricanes some versatility with the ability to play either defensive end or outside linebacker.

Ishmael is currently the only other defensive end in the class and three-star Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna defensive tackle Allan Haye is the only other defensive lineman.

Miami has three three-star linebackers committed: Miami Killian outside linebacker Tyler Johnson, Miami Northwestern outside linebacker Ja’Corey Hammett and Orlando Edgewater inside linebacker Deshawn Troutman.
