Former Miami quarterback Jarren Williams transferring to a junior college, per reports
Former University of Miami starting quarterback Jarren Williams has found a new home, per multiple reports.
Williams is transferring to Garden City Community College in Kansas, as first reported late Sunday night by @JuCoFootballACE.
Williams, who showed significant talent and promise, won the UM starting job before the 2019 season, then fizzled in a season that reached the highest of highs, and finally, the lowest of lows. He redshirted his first season at Miami in 2018, announced his entry to the transfer portal in January and now has three years of eligibility remaining.
By playing at a community college, Williams does not have to sit out a season, which he likely would have had to had he chosen to transfer to a Football Bowl Subdvision member. He could go straight to the NFL after the 2020 season, if he were drafted or signed a free agent’s contract.
Williams set a Hurricanes’ school record with six passing touchdowns Nov. 9 in a dominating 52-27 performance against Louisville. But he ended the 2019 season with three poor performances against FIU, Duke and Louisiana Tech, all losses for the eventual 6-7 Canes.
The Hurricanes now have five quarterbacks on scholarship who are vying for the starting job. Houston graduate transfer D’Eriq King is the strong favorite. The others: former part-time starter N’Kosi Perry, a redshirt junior; redshirt junior Tate Martell; redshirt freshman Peyton Matocha; and incoming freshman Tyler Van Dyke.
Williams played in 12 games last season, with 10 starts, going 169 of 276 (61.2 percent) for 2,187 yards and 19 touchdowns, with seven interceptions that came in three games (Virginia Tech, FIU and Louisiana Tech). He was not helped by a deficient offensive line, getting sacked 34 times.
In 2018, Williams played in one game, completing 1 of 3 passes for 17 yards and rushing for a touchdowns.
”I came here with dreams of winning National Championships and my only regret is that I will not be able to achieve that goal...’’ Williams posted on Instagram in January when announcing his decision to transfer and thanking UM players, coaches and fans “for their support.”
