Former Miami TE Michael Irvin II, son of UM great and Hall of Famer, transferring to FAU
Just before the coronavirus pandemic halted University of Miami college football after only four spring practices, tight end Michael Irvin II, the son of former Hurricanes great and Pro Football Hall of Fame member Michael Irvin, announced he was transferring.
Monday night, Irvin announced on social media that he has found a new home up the road for his final season.
“After a number of discussions with family,’’ Irvin posted on Twitter, “we believe that I have been granted an opportunity that I can’t pass up. I have decided I will spend my last year playing college football as an FAU Owl!”
FAU, now coached by former FSU coach Willie Taggart, was the recent home of reigning Mackey Award winner Harrison Bryant as the top tight end in the country. Bryant was drafted in April in the fourth round by the Cleveland Browns and became the first college player from a non-Power 5 school to win the Mackey.
It’s hardly surprising that Irvin sought to transfer. Among the talented tight ends ahead of Irvin was top tight end Brevin Jordan, a possible first-round future draft choice, as well as fellow gifted junior Will Mallory. UM also has promising redshirt freshman Larry Hodges and true freshman Dominic Mammarelli.
Irvin, who played in 13 games and started three last season, had two catches in 2019 for 33 yards. His UM career numbers: 11 catches for 111 yards in 31 games. He said in March that the transfer “hurts my heart to the core but I believe it will be what’s best for my family and myself. Nothing but love for this place and the people in it.’’
On Monday night, Irvin posted on Twitter: “I have had a riddled college football career so far which is why I have made this decision very carefully. With that being said, I have learned a lot and would not change my experience and the relationships I have made throughout the process. I’m thankful for everything I have been able to do.
“...I have received unparalleled amounts of love from the staff and I am extremely excited to start this new chapter of my life. #FAU.’’
Irvin will be the fourth FAU player with family members who starred for UM. The others: redshirt junior safety Jeff James, the nephew of Edgerrin James; redshirt freshman defensive lineman Warren Sapp II, the son of Warren Sapp; and redshirt sophomore receiver Rahsaan Lewis, the son of Ray Lewis.
