Podcast: What will make this a successful NFL Draft week for the Miami Hurricanes?
Thursday and Friday at the 2020 NFL Draft could be quiet for the Miami Hurricanes, but Miami is poised for a Day 3 bonanza this year.
The Hurricanes sent eight players to the NFL Scouting Combine, and ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. projected last month for all eight to have their names called on the third and final day of the NFL Draft.
If it happens, Miami will be one of the leaders in terms of players drafted without having anyone picked before the fourth round. It’ll be unusual, so David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Hurricanes beat writer for the Miami Herald, try to make sense of it on the pre-Draft edition of the Eye on the U podcast. What sort of Draft results could be deemed a success for the Hurricanes this week? How much are we valuing the sheer number of players taken compared to other schools which might have fewer players picked in earlier rounds?
We close out by handing out some superlatives to those eight major draft prospects, including biggest sleeper potential, least likely to get drafted and most ready to contribute immediately in the NFL. We rave about the work ethic of wide receiver K.J. Osborn and linebacker Shaquille Quarterman, and worry about injuries to running back DeeJay Dallas and linebacker Michael Pinckney. We gush about the potential of defensive linemen Jonathan Garvin and Trevon Hill, and pick nits with wide receiver Jeff Thomas and cornerback Trajan Bandy.
Mostly, we feel uncertain, which is what happens when most players are projected to go in the final rounds of one of the most uncertain Drafts in history. Join us as we try to sort through all the possibilities and why there’s reason to think some teams might find some steals by looking in Coral Gables.
