Hurricane legend Jimmy Johnson picks Troy Aikman as Pro Football Hall of Fame presenter
The wound caused by Jimmy Johnson’s split from the Cowboys still appears fresh.
Johnson announced on Twitter that Troy Aikman, not Jerry Jones, will be his presenter at his Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony this summer.
Aikman was Johnson’s first overall draft pick in 1989. The duo went on to win two Super Bowls together in Dallas and now share an employer at FOX.
Still, there was some speculation that Jones might present Johnson. Many of the other Dallas greats —including Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, and Larry Allen — have had the famed Cowboys owner present them. Ironically, Aikman broke the trend with selecting former offensive coordinator Norv Turner do the honors.
Though the two have become somewhat amicable since their split in 1994, the bad blood is clearly still there. Johnson has still yet to make the Cowboys Ring of Honor, a distinction reserved for only the best players and coaches in franchise history which USA Today referred to as “the gatekeeper to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”
The tension dates 26 years ago when Johnson, five years removed from his days as Hurricanes coach, resigned from Cowboys. While it’s unclear what led to his departure, let’s just say a mix of jealousy and resentment proved to be final straw.
Regardless of the presenter, you can count on the cities of Miami and Dallas to be ecstatic when Johnson becomes enshrined in football immortality.
